The Refinery – Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of our latest insert – “The Refinery” for the Pipeline board game from Ryan Courtney and Capstone Games.

The colors of the inserts have the following general meaning:

  • White – These inserts are used just for stabilizing the inserts while they are in the box, and can stay in the box
  • Orange / Green – These inserts are used during setup.  Once the game is ready to play, they can be set to the side, or returned to the box.
  • Black / Grey – These inserts are used during play and should be set out on the table.

These inserts support both sleeved and non-sleeved cards.

  • Valuation Cards – We used Fantasy Flight Greys to size the Valuations insert for sleeved card.  Other sleeves may very well work, but you should check outside dimensions of the sleeves if you are considering it.
  • Upgrade Cards – These are fairly unique sized cards that don’t appear to have a standard card sleeve available.  We used Mayday Sails of Glory – Orange – Premium (MDG-7135, 50/pack)
    • NOTE: You will need to trim the top off with scissors to make these approximately 2 3/4″ (70 mm) tall.

This diagram shows the general arrangement of the insert components in the box (click to enlarge)

The diagram shows a top down view and then a side view of the Cash Tray / Barrel Tray area.

The diagram shows the options Emerging Markets expansion trays (name starts with “EM”).  you can ignore their placement if you don’t have those components.

While the Barrel – Penalty Cube trays can technically go in first (on the bottom), that would require the Tanks-Machines tray to go along with it on the bottom.  If that happens, when the grey and orange trays go in next, there will be some amount of the Tanks-Machines tray left uncovered and tanks and machines will spill throughout the box, creating a complete mess.

Here is a rundown on what game pieces go in which insert.  Trays associated with the Emerging Markets expansion start with the letters “EM”.

The player board walls are intended to stabilize the rest of the inserts in the box.  They basically enclose the Player Boards, and form a “box” in which you can store the bag of Pipeline tiles.

NOTE: The two walls are designed to meet flush at the common corner. The short wall base has a cut out to accept the long wall base, and the short wall “Wall” is scalloped to follow the brace on the end of the long wall.

The KS version of the game came with a cloth bag.  If you don’t have the KS version, you can substitute a regular gallon zip loc bag.
