Here are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of our Barbican XL travel box, designed to hold the classic Carcassonne base game and up to two expansions.
How do I store the Expansions?
What expansions can be stored in the Barbican XL Travel Box?
Here are recommended configurations for storing expansions in the Barbican XL Travel Box:
| Expansion | Tile Storage Area(s) | Token Box | Supplementary Storage | Player Supplementary Storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – Inns & Cathedrals (Z-MAN Rules) | 24 tiles in one storage area | Large Follower | The 50/ 100 point tiles can be replaced by the point tokens provided | ||
| 2 – Traders and Builders (Z-MAN Rules) | 24 tiles in one storage area | Trade goods tokens | Cloth bag | Pig and Builder followers | |
| 3 – Princess and Dragon (Z-MAN Rules) | 24 tiles in one storage area + 6 tiles in the other storage area | Fairy and Dragon | |||
| 5 – Abbey and Mayor (Z-MAN Rules) | 18 tiles in one storage area | Mayor, Wagon, and Barn | |||
| 6 – Count, King, and Robber (Z-MAN Rules) | 24 tiles (land tiles; king and robber tiles) in one storage area | Wooden Count, King and Robber markers | Large City tiles will need to go above or below score track resulting in some lid lift | ||
| 8 – Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars (Z-MAN Rules) | Castle and Land tiles in one storage area Some bridges in other storage area | Remaining Bridges | This takes up the majority of available expansion space | ||
| 9 – Hills and Sheep (Z-MAN Rules) | 18 tiles in one storage area | Flock tokens | Cloth bag | Shepherds | |
| 10 – Under the Big Top (Z-MAN Rules) | 24 tiles in one storage area 16 tiles in the other storage area | Animal tokens | Ringmasters | This expansion hasn’t been verified yet, but looks like it would fit. Big Top may need to go in 2nd storage area |
NOTE: The following expansions are most likely not compatible with the Barbican XL Travel Box:
- Expansion 4: The Tower
- Expansion 7: The Catapult
Where did the name "Barbican" come from?
We like to give our inserts names that are at least distant cousins to the theme of the game they support. In this case, the “Barbican” is a fortified outpost or gateway for a city. Seemed fitting with the castles and theme of Carcassonne.
